Yang's pictorial practice revolves around the notion of autofiction, exploring the connections between memory, identity, and lineage. Portraiture lies at the heart of his work, serving as a vehicle for intimate and affective narratives often drawn from personal experience and quiet life trajectories. Through painting that is at once sensitive and assertive, Yang composes dreamlike scenes in which reality intertwines with fiction, and the past resurfaces through vibrant colours and carefully worked textures. His technique is both rigorous and expressive, drawing on a rich personal and collective iconography. Traditional Hmong textile motifs — historically carriers of communal narratives, such as those of the war in Laos — are reappropriated and transposed onto canvas to bear witness to a living heritage. These motifs act as narrative elements and visual symbols that resonate with both his family history and the wider histories of diasporas.
