In French heraldry the leopard is the lion's bastard brother; she proudly bears the leopard...The artist's partner puts an end to a devil — an anthropomorphic lion symbolising conformism. In French heraldry the leopard is the lion's bastard brother; she proudly bears the leopard to bring down the lion, embracing her own dreams over what society had planned for her — a reference to the life of artists. Her shield, too, defies heraldic code, as if she were forcing her way into the world.
