Part of an altarpiece inspired by the Carolingian poem «Valentin and Orson», the story of two brothers separated at birth — one raised by a bear in the forest, the other at the royal court. It depicts a duality found in most people, between those of the countryside and those of the city, through two self-portraits: one as a knight (Valentin), the other as a wild man (Orson). It reflects Yang's own story, in which isolation changed his social behaviour and his relationships. Valentin's panel is crafted from walnut, a wood associated with nobility.
Together with Orson, this diptych forms the altarpiece Valentin et Orson.
