Overview

Stella Zhong’s practice engages built environments, cryptic objects, and precisely enacted events to express an urgency for nonconformity. With a naughty approach to astrophysics and anthropology, Zhong builds worlds as propositions. She creates models radically scaled to make space for logic to deviate and models that simulate alternative modes of power, knowledge creation, and empathy. Zhong is invested in dislocating the human-centric perspective. By bringing together the unlikeliest objects within incongruent spatial relationships, her work navigates the gap between dissociation and transformation, reassessing notions of belonging and anonymity.

Stella Zhong (b. 1993, Shenzhen, China) lives and works in New York, NY. She holds a BFA in Glass from Rhode Island School of Design and received her MFA from Yale University in 2021. Zhong has had solo exhibitions at Chapter NY, New York; Peninsula Art Space, Brooklyn; Weybosset Gallery, Providence; and Guan Shanyue Art Museum, Shenzhen. Her work has been included at Mana Contemporary, Jersey City; HUA International, Beijing; M 2 3, New York; Tiger Strikes Asteroid, Brooklyn; Paris School of Art, Paris; and more.
